Do you need concrete footings for what you're building?
Concrete footings are the buried strips or pads of concrete under a wall, post or addition, and in Concord we pour them to carry your structure's weight into the ground so it stays where it was built.
Most folks call me partway through planning an addition, a garage, a retaining wall or a bigger deck, when someone mentions footings and nobody has explained what they're for. The price moves with the kind of footing your project calls for, how wide your ground needs it to be, and the digging, concrete and labor that go into it, while the schedule mostly turns on the permit and the city's inspections. Footings are often one part of a bigger foundation installation, and once I've seen your site, the written estimate gives you your own number.
How do you know you need new footings?
A post sinking or leaning
If a deck or porch post has dropped or tipped, it's usually sitting on a pad that's too small for the weight, or on bare dirt. Every wet winter it tends to go a little further, and the boards and railing above start pulling apart.
Cracks climbing a wall
A crack that steps up a block wall or angles out from a window corner usually means one part of what's underneath has moved more than the rest. Left alone, the gap tends to widen and let water in, which can soften the ground under it even more.
Plans for something heavy
An addition, a garage or a hot tub puts weight where your yard has never carried it before. That's the time to plan the footing, because fixing one after the framing is up costs far more than pouring it right the first time.
How we build concrete footings
Footings carry everything above them, so I start by going over what you're building and what's known about your ground before I size anything. Then we mark it out, dig the trench or holes, check that the bottom is firm soil and not loose fill, set forms where the ground won't hold a clean edge, and tie in rebar, the steel bars that keep concrete from pulling apart when it bends. After the pour comes curing, the slow hardening that gives concrete its strength, and one footing guide advises keeping fresh concrete damp for at least 3 to 7 days, under plastic or with a spray of water, so I'll tell you how we're handling that on your job. A footing is buried the day it's poured, which makes it the easiest place to trim a budget and the worst place to do it, because you can't fix it later without lifting whatever sits on top.
Sometimes the footing is only part of the job. If an older footing has already let part of your house settle, foundation raising brings it back up before we add anything new beside it, and when a new footing has to go through an existing slab or patio, concrete cutting gives us a clean opening instead of a broken edge.
Continuous footings
These run in one long strip under load-bearing walls and foundation walls, spreading the weight along the whole wall. They suit additions, garages and anything with walls that carry a roof or a second floor.
Pad footings
These are single pads set under a post or column, each one carrying its own share of the weight. They suit decks, porches, carports and patio covers, where the load comes down at a few points.

Once you're set, we sort out what the city or county needs for your job. Then I'm on site for the dig and the pour with our form setters and finishers.

Why Concord homeowners call King Concord Concrete Works for footings
The owner writes your estimate
I'm the one who comes out, looks at the ground and writes the estimate, and I'm on site with our small crew of form setters and finishers when we pour. The person who explained your footing is the person standing at the trench.
Options explained before signing
I taught myself concrete on small jobs, learned the rest on other people's crews and started this business in 2020, so we're six years in. We're best known for laying out the choices plainly before you sign anything, so nothing about the job surprises you later.
Licensed and insured in California
California requires a license from the state licensing board for anyone building or altering a structure when the job needs a building permit, uses employees or totals $1,000 or more in labor and materials. We're licensed and insured, so you're not taking a chance on who's digging under your house.
Footings are the one part of a project you can't easily redo, so ask me every question up front. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job, and the first step is to tell us what you're building.
Footings, permits and ground in Concord
For a footing job in Concord, the city's Project Pal tool shows which permits your project needs and estimates the fees, so it's worth a look while you plan. We check with the city or county that covers your address to see what your job calls for, and we handle the permit paperwork when one is needed.
Weaker soil needs a wider footing, and a wider footing costs more, so the ground under your house can raise or lower the price of the very same job. That's why I ask what's known about your ground before sizing anything. The state sends Seismic Hazard Zone maps to cities and counties to use when they plan and control construction, and local agencies can set rules stricter than state law. In May 2026 the state also released preliminary earthquake fault zones for public review that affect Concord along with other cities, and they're still preliminary. We take the same care with ground on jobs in Walnut Creek and Martinez, where a lot of our footing calls come from older houses getting additions and bigger decks.
Questions about concrete footings in Concord
What does a concrete footing do?
A concrete footing spreads the concentrated weight of a building over a much wider area of soil, and that keeps the building in place. It works like a snowshoe, where the same weight sinks less once it's spread out, so a footing is sized to what sits on it.
How much do concrete footings cost in Concord?
Installed concrete footings across the US usually cost about $4 to $20 per linear foot, based on a 2026 estimate, so treat that as a national range and not a Concord price. Concrete, labor and digging drive the price, and a wider, deeper footing on weak soil can cost several times what a shallow one does. For your own figure, I'll come out and put an estimate in writing.
Which costs more, continuous or pad footings?
Continuous footings cost more to install than pad footings, because they run the full length of a wall instead of sitting under single posts. Which one you need comes from what you're building, so the type shapes your budget from the start.
Who has to be on site for a city inspection in Concord?
For work a contractor installs, the city wants the contractor on site for the inspection, not just the homeowner. If nobody's there when the inspector arrives, the city charges a re-inspection fee, so I plan to be there for each one.
What causes a deck or porch footing to sink?
A footing usually sinks because it's too small for the weight on it, or because it was poured on loose fill or soft, wet ground instead of firm soil. The fix is generally a properly sized new footing, and if the house itself has dropped, lifting it comes first.
How do I get ready for a concrete footing estimate?
Have three things in mind: what you're building, a rough idea of how many linear feet of footing it needs, and anything you know about the soil. Plans or a sketch help, and if you don't know the footage yet, I'll measure it with you on site. Call (925) 536-0945 or use the form to set up the visit.

Foundation raising
When doors start sticking and cracks keep growing because part of the house has dropped, lifting it back level is the job to look at first.
Concrete cutting
Sometimes the spot for a new footing sits under an existing patio, garage floor or walkway, and a saw cut opens it neatly so the rest stays usable.
